John Fowler & Nancy Lancaster

John Fowler worked with and was inspired by and inspired Nancy Lancaster for many years. He began as an apprentice in a workroom that painted screens and fabric. He joined Sibyl Colefax's interior design firm in 1938. But it was his collaboration with Nancy Lancaster that really put him on the map. Together they made famous the English Country look (which wasn't really invented by a decorator, it just evolved in English country houses). It is the beautiful but slightly shabby look featuring lots of chintz and antiques handed down through families. Nancy Lancaster and John Fowler perfected this look. Over time Fowler's style became less shabby and more refined and fussy (especially the elaborate curtains he favored).

Sat 26th June...

Still on A27... Not long till a friendly character picks old skinty up! Oh what fun we'll have chatting all the way to Glasto. :)

Elle Decor, A Room Makeover, and OMG MY SON WILL SOON BE A MIDDLE SCHOOLER

I'm starting off with the obvious choice given the title of my post today. Seriously, Elle Decor!!! OK, I really meant to start with the fact that my son is about five weeks away from "graduating" from elementary school. He's almost as tall as me, has an ever-deepening voice and says amazingly witty, spot-on things like, "Mom, as long as you have your belly fat and your good sense of humor, you'll be all right." God, I love that kid. Just can't believe he's almost 12.

Now, back to other important things happening around here at Mod Mom Furniture headquarters. I'll just list them because I've already had seventeen cups of coffee and can't be bothered to eloquently transition from one topic to another. Look! Over there! A bird! See. I'm all over the place today.

Elle Decor: Check out this cool article on Elle Decor's website about The Bertie Box! Here's the text from Elle:

Our animal roundup wouldn’t be complete without a kids-only piece. This sweet and simple toy box made from birch plywood is just the height for little ones but mod enough for the older set. We love the way this bird’s stick legs sit on the side while its orange body lies on top. Plus, its unusual design makes cleanup a bit more fun—kids can lift the lid via the cutout wing and stash stray toys in snap. Bertie Toy Box by Mod Mom, $475; DesignPublic.com

Green Your Decor: Ja' Naya's mom, Jennae, writes Green Your Decor and she contacted me about possibly donating an Owyn Toy Box for her daughter's room makeover. Ja' Naya is battling leukemia at age 4 so the family recently moved closer to her doctors/medical care. Jennae wanted to give Ja' Naya an eco-friendly room makeover and she made it happen! The last piece is the Owyn Toy Box which I will building in June. Check out the article HERE!

More to come on other EXCITING events here at Mod Mom! Crazy amounts of excitement around here like just the other day, I rearranged my workshop to fit a 12 foot high wooden jukebox. And the Fed Ex guy waved "hi" to me from the store across the street. It's a good thing I have my belly fat and sense of humor to help me manage.

Stance Faucet Collection

This elegant bathroom faucet by bathroom guru Kohler is contemporary design defined. Inspired by technology, the stylish Stance faucet collection is going the way of phones, flat-screen televisions and ultra-thin computers with its slim and sleek lines
. Perfect right angles and hard edges make a bold statement, while the polished chrome (also available in a softer brushed nickel) finish brings just enough bling to your modern bathrooms and powder rooms. The collection includes single-lever lavatory faucets, wall-mounted and deck-mounted bath faucets, and shower fixtures and trim. Modern style is at your fingertips!

Room Envy - Cozy, Earthy, Warm and Delectable!

I just adore a lot of Thibaut's fabric and paper, and whilst cruising around their site today I came across this room, and immediately melted. I could just see myself spending hours in there.... eating deliciously tasty and scented food, laughing over a favourite drink with friends, meandering through the paper on a Sunday morning with a croissant and a hot cup of tea (I don't drink coffee)!

I love these sorts of natural, warm colours, and enjoy the bright splash of the yellow, orange, and green accents provided by the plant and fruit additions.

Cheers,

Linda.

There’s more to popular bathroom brand Kohler than faucets and fixtures! This modern pendant lighting collection is clean and contemporary, appropriately named

Recipe for a successful, comfortable room

Sitting room at Haseley Court, image from little augury

Nancy Lancaster thought rooms should look undecorated, aged and furnished over time. We agree with her. Here is her list of things that are important for a "comfortable environment," from The Great Lady Decorators:

"1. In restoring a house, one must first realize its period, feel its personality, and try to bring out its good points;
2. Decorating must be appropriate;
3. Scale is of prime importance, and I think that oversized scale is better than undersized scale;
4. In choosing a color, one must remember that it changes in different aspects;
5. Understatement is extremely important, and crossing too many t's and dotting too many i's makes a room look overdone and tiresome. One should create something that fires the imagination without overemphasis;
6. I never think that sticking slavishly to one period is successful; a touch of nostalgia adds charm. One needs light and shade, because if every piece is perfect, the room becomes a museum and is lifeless;
7. A gentle mixture of furniture expresses life and continuity, but it must be a delicious mixture that flows and mixes well. It is a bit like mixing a salad. I am better at rooms than salads.

To these guidelines Nancy always added her magic ingredients; open fires, candle light, and masses of fresh flowers."

Her famous yellow room above is filled with beautiful furniture and things and yet don't you just want to kick off your shoes and curl up in a chair? Comfortable, beautiful rooms have form and function working together hand in hand.

Charleston designer Amelia Handegan's rooms have that same feel to them.

Branca understands what Nancy Lancaster was describing above - she says: "For me it's not enough that a room look good. It also has to work. I put an incredible amount of effort into making people feel comfortable." from New Classics Interiors by Alessandra Branca

3 Images That Startled Me - So Beautiful!

I was absolutely gobsmacked when I came across these 3 beautiful photos of one of my favourite animals. I can so clearly see them residing on the walls of my home, taking pride of place amongst my other eclectic photos and artworks. How wonderful it would be to pass by them every day and smile at the vibe they create for me.

Amazing.

Aren't they just incredible images! All 3 are sourced from The Design Inspiration.

Ask yourself: 'Do I 'have a thing' for any particular animal?'

Which leads to: 'Is this animal represented in my home? How could I bring it into my home or surroundings?'

Because: Judicious placement (not haphazard and over zealous cluttering) of things that particularly call to you will satiate a certain innate fascination within you, will ground you, and connect you to the place you call home.

Cheers,

Linda.
