Purple, love it or leave it?

Not everyone loves purple, but I do! And it's done so well in Nina Campbell's London residence featured by Veranda. I love everything about the room above, it's traditional yet whimsical, pretty but not too serious.

Mita Corsini Bland - Illustrator of Sister Parish Design

illustration by Mita Corsini Bland for Sister Parish Design

I am crazy for beautiful illustrations of house interiors. Sometimes they seem to capture the essence of a room better than photographs (a little artistic license goes a long way). Mark Hampton's illustrations are some of my all time favorites (see his book Mark Hampton: On Decorating).

So, I was thrilled when I received my copy of Sister Parish Design - On Decorating and found that it was illustrated beautifully by Mita Corsini Bland. Between the illustrations and all of the helpful pointers from the best decorators of our time, this book is a must have for your design library.

Catalog Living - the blog

Once in a while you stumble on a blog that just makes your day. Thanks to the AJ Photostylist on facebook I checked out this blog - Catalog Living. It's a hilarious look at the life behind all of the catalogs you get in the mail.

Don't miss this blog - it's a guaranteed smile! Click here to see what happens in the shower above.

Sister Parish Design - On Decorating

If you have not read this book by Susan Bartlett Crater and Libby Cameron, and you love interior design - go get it immediately. It's like sitting at a round table discussion with the best in the field today. I read it at the beach in June and couldn't put it down.

Speaking of Sister Parish, a few images of Parish Hadley design -

Gratitude Notes - I Believe She's Amazing...

I found this wonderful, uplifting, and inspiring video on Andrea Sher's Superhero Journal. It's called 'I Believe She's Amazing'.

The best bit is right at the end.

There's more info about the video and the cause behind it at I Believe She's Amazing.

Today I am grateful for all the amazing women I have in my life. My fabulous female friends and family members (especially my awe inspiring 80 year old mum), my super colleagues...... thank you all for being who you are.

What are you grateful for today?

Who are the amazing women in your life?

What Is It You're Craving For Your Home But Haven't Tried Yet? 3 Questions To Ask Yourself...

There's something I've been literally craving for a while.

Something I'd love to do in my current home..... but I've been putting it off.

Why?

Because I ask myself questions like...
  • But what if I need to sell in a few years and this puts prospective buyers off?
  • What if I decide to rent my property out instead of selling, but no-one likes what I've done?
  • What if visitors think I'm a bit 'over the top'?
But the thing is..... I really FEEL like I want to do this. And, feelings are really important when you're creating a home that sings to your soul. A home that nurtures, supports, and cradles you. A home that simply makes you outrageously happy. :)

So I've decided those very same questions above are vital things to consider...... but in the REVERSE!

So the questions become:
  • What would I do if I NEVER had to think about selling this property or who would buy it?
  • What would I do if I NEVER had to consider its rental potential?
  • What would I do if EVERYONE who visited automatically loved my home no matter what? (And by the way, I've not had anyone in my home who hasn't made comment about the feeling of coziness or happiness it exudes - so I guess I should trust my senses with my next decorating adventure anyway!)
Because, I've come to the conclusion that in my heart (and most probably in yours), there are still unrealised dreams...... unfulfilled wishes........ unused ideas........

.....and there's no reason they shouldn't be attempted, and at the same time every reason they should!

My home is an extension of me.

It surrounds me with happiness.

It overflows with a vibe that brings peace and contentment into my life.

It externalises the bits of me (and the memories of my life) I love the most, and reflects them back to me in ways I enjoy.

So why shouldn't I listen to my heart's craving and 'have-a-go' at what it's telling me it desires next in my decorating adventures? Particularly if I can undertake my decorating wish without too much damage or irreversable action!

I think I need to write down a priority list and put this next 'hankering' at the very tip top!

What about you?

What is it you'd like to do in your home?

What is it you've been thinking of doing, but too scared to try (for whatever reason)?

What is it you'd love to 'have-a-go' at, but feel as if you don't 'know' how to start?

Pssssst........... I think you should just DO IT (thanks Nike)......... and see what happens. :)

Linda. xox

******
P.S: My 'hankering' is a room full of wallpaper. Big, bold, geometric (or maybe floral) wallpaper.

I keep wondering what the rather conservative members of my city would think if I put my home on the market within the next few years (after all, people get very distracted by wall colour and wallpaper when looking at houses to buy, even though it's so easy to fix.)

But, as it IS so easy to change a colour, and relatively easy to strip wallpaper now-a-days.... I can always change it before selling or renting!

Or, maybe, knowing how my home vibrates with a welcoming and comfortable feeling, I could trust in its ability to attract a new owner that loves it just as much as I do ( if I ever need to sell it).

Pilgrimage

Every summer Jane Douglas and her children make a pilgrimage to her home state of Virginia to see her family and friends in the Old Dominion. A few days ago she stopped by Virginia Beach which is full of great old beach houses. The temperature reached 105 degrees while they were there - the heat seems to be coming through in the photos!

This is going to date me, but I can't say or hear the word pilgrimage without hearing the REM song in my head -

House of the Week

This week the house of the week is a Peachtree Heights Tudor owned by shop proprietor and designer Kay Douglass. I remember this house (from my morning dog walks at the duck pond) before the Douglass family owned it - it was a little bit ramshackle and there were random sculptures and items in the front yard. Kay Douglass has kept the house's charm while updating and freshening it.

I love the steel casement windows.

The porch, closeup photo of it without these lanterns is below.

This house has been featured in Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles and also in some lighting advertisements, which you can see at the Limestone and Boxwoods blog.

Kay Douglass clearly likes Tudor style houses - her previous house, featured in Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles, was a Tudor also.

Monday Music - The Holy Grail

This is where it all began (personally one of my fave articles ever!!).

Music is SO important to the happiness of my home. :)

Now most Monday mornings when the working week looms I'll try to post a fave song or some music I'm listening to at the moment to provide some musical motivation.

So my little groovers......... here's today's installment!

*****************************

This song is by one of my fave Aussie pub bands, Hunters and Collectors. This is their cult classic Holy Grail....

And, as always when thinking of our 'Musical Must Haves' section...

Ask yourself: 'Do I L.O.V.E music?'

Which leads to: 'Have I got enough of it in my home and in my life?'

Because: Good interior design caters to ALL our senses, not just our eyes.... that's why I call it 'Atmospheric Design' instead!

Rock on!

Beauty and the Beast

224

The Beauty.  Our favorite new drink is called a Caesar, or Bloody Caesar. My neighbors from Canada made us this drink, and we fell in love with it.   We decided to call it a "Bloggy Caesar" because we were drinking it while our amazing graphic designer, Alicia, was teaching us how to use our new, **exciting** blog!   The drink is basically a Bloody Mary, only substitute "Clamato" (which is a delicious concoction but you don't want to hear the ingredients) for the tomato juice.

We staged this photo above, called "The Beauty" , but if you want to see the reality - here is "The Beast" :

219

This is how the Design House really looks!  (between shows, that is) What's that old saying "Creative minds are rarely tidy"?!  That definitely applies to us.  Here  is the recipe for The Bloggy Caesar below.

The Bloggy Caesar
  • 1 1/2 oz vodka
  • 4 oz Clamato (in the juice aisle next to the tomato juice and V-8)
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire
  • dash Tabasco
  • celery salt
  • lime wedge
  • pepper
  • celery stalk
  • Rub lime wedge over rim of glass.  Press  the glass into a dish of celery salt.  Mix remaining ingredients and pour over ice.  Add a celery stalk & DRINK UP!
Here is Suzanne - working hard on the BLOG!! (and after one or two Bloggy Caesars)

...and here is Alicia sportin' her fancy new tattoo that Suzanne & Amy picked up for her at the LA Gift Show:

We LOVE her, and she's not really this bad-ass.  This picture above is "The Beast", but  here's "The Beauty" :

Thanks, Alicia! We love our new blog!

Smile

(kiersten, 2nd grade)

(grace, 2nd grade)

It's beyond me where she got her smile. No doubt her overly excited, OMG-I'm-going-to-Disneyland-smile is from her father.

I wonder when that fake smile thing ended for me? I mean, occasionally, I see it in photos but just not as pronounced. It's more of a "take the damn picture" smile. These days, the dog days of summer, there are loads of smiles from my kids. What with the above ground plastic swimming pool and the trampoline, they're in kid heaven. I'm enjoying not having to rush them out the door (except for summer camp days -- god, I love those days) in the morning and deal with all the homework stuff, lunch money that I forget to give sometimes, and fundraisers. I'm still working away in my garage and am prepping for a possible writing/video gig for a very cool online site so for me, it's a bit business as usual. But for them, I see all the tension from the structured life they lead during the school year melt away. It's great when you can see your kids happy and stress-free. I'm proud to say the full-blown open mouth smiles are everywhere but dang it if I don't love the one you see above.

Slow Going

When will this (next door to me):

Be this?
