What the heck have we been up to?

Well, May is a gigantic month for us..Design House, Mother's day, Spring Market and Memorial Day.. so June and July seem like a good time to calm down a little, regroup… shop shop shop, to get our spaces filled back in, and start preparing for the next Design House.

It's time to start thinking about trends and palettes for the fall, and the general direction we would like to see the house go.
The summer is also the time when stuff starts arriving for Christmas…you’ve heard of Christmas in July…well…it actually happens in June here…

All of the thousands of new ornaments for our Holiday Show House arrive throughout the summer and early fall to give us time to unwrap, price and sort.

It's also the time we all take a moment to catch our breath and have a moment with our families.

This is absolutely the greatest job in the world, but if you’re not careful, it can literally be all you do.

There is always another event on the horizon, there is always an empty spot that needs to be filled, another dresser to paint....there is always another Christmas ball to price…so whenever there is a moment to breathe….  We think it's important to take advantage of that!

WE love you all and hope you are taking advantage of the calm(ish) moments in life as well!

Sneak Peek: Cheryl's Kitcken Confidential

I'm having fun going through all my pictures to put together a timeline of our kitchen renovation. We have lived in our house for 7 years now and started this project in 2010 and finally we will have a kitchen soon.
Ken and I are both in the food & beverage industry so days off sometimes are non existent and when you are off you can barely function because you just worked 5 12-14 hour days. We are both crazy energetic and love our careers plus adore restoring our home. This is why we are in the 3rd year of this process, not a lot of time. We only hired out the plumbing and have done all the work ourselves.

I had grown up with helping my Dad, who was a Master carpenter and my Mom who was obsessed with DIY projects non stop. The two of them built the house I grew up in with only the help of my Grandfather who did all the plastering, old school no sheet rock back then!

Ken on the other hand has never in his life done anything like this. He is self taught I guess by trial and error and he defiantly has talent. Even my picky Mom was impressed.

I get a kick out of the picture above. Ken is sitting, looks like he is fiddling with something electrical,  where we tore down the wall between the old kitchen and the dining room. I especially love that he has his head lamp on, nerd, and the coffee maker is sitting on a chainsaw box. We had to cut down a tree in our front yard that lighting struck, another skill we learned along with one more tool added to the growing collection.
Also if you notice the doorway that leads to the staircase we closed that up to make more wall space. At this stage had decided on a galley style white kitchen with a vintage cottage modern feel.

                                                                         2010
 Scary
This is the original kitchen. We had just installed the new insulated door that we love. All the windows and doors would steam up when you did any type of cooking. We have replaced all the windows in the house except for 3!

The sink will be moved to the other side and bigger windows installed making a new home for a L shaped window seat eating area. I purchased the white chimney cabinet years ago in Philadelphia which we have restored and made into our pantry, pictures later.

                                                                     2010

Don't you love that we just kept the protective covering on the refrigerator for 2 years. Everyone thought we bought a blue one, hahaha!

I had decided to keep this renovation on a strict budget. I bought the appliances not when we where ready but when they where on sale. We would just move the boxes to different spots around the house so we could work, cray cray!

We had gutted the kitchen down to the studs and replaced the wiring and insulation. We where now getting ready to attempt to install a smaller window in place of a larger and it was freezing outside. Somehow we did it! The staircase doorway has been sealed and the walls are ready for sheet rock. Hey see our TV trays, we had dinner on those for 3 years!!!! Oliver is always with Ken, so cute. Hey does anyone want a chandelier?
New project! Ken, please build us a porch.

                                                                  2011

Poor Ken, because I had the bright idea to buy the entire kitchen on sale even if we where not ready, big problem..... storage. First the cabinets where in and had to be delivered. In the living room we had sheet rock, tools, dishwasher etc. ugh.

Now he has to figure out how to build a screened in porch to solve the storage problem and have some extra space.

We both took a week off from work thinking this will be so easy, shoot the house already has a deck so we'll just tear off the railings and use the deck part for the floor, build a roof, add walls and screens.
We then said, hey might as well get 3 ton of rock delivered and make a patio area. I found out fast that wheel barreling rock is a back breaking job and building a porch takes longer than a week. But we did it!
All the aches, pain and misery was well worth it. We enjoy our porch and patio everyday.
back to kitchen:
                                                                        2012

Moving along, we decided to do half of the kitchen at a time so we would have space to move around and work. The sheet rock is going up and we are getting ready to mud, yuck..... that means sanding which leads to massive amounts of dust everywhere!!!!

Wow, windows in & tape/mud on. We have taken some of the cabinets out to see how it is all going to work. Few minor problems but we have a plan. We have been cooking on the stove where ever we move it, it's all good.
Ken thinks I can't see him!

Don't you love these tall cabinets?

Yes, walls are getting painted and the layout is working. I bought the cabinets on sale at Home Depot, Martha Stewart Collection. We chose to go with simple and white. Next the counter tops will be installed soon. We are feeling it! The ceiling we are going to put up white wainscoting and beams, a cottage feel.

A beautiful thing. Silestone counter tops from Home Depot. Looks like marble but a fraction of the cost. I really really love them. You can't tell but we have sanded the floors. Which we have decided to paint white much cheaper than new bamboo flooring and I think it will look grand! Running water soon, just waiting for the plumber.
                                                               Phase 2
Same as the other side, ripped everything out to the studs, new wiring and insulation. We also put new larger windows in. This will be where the window seat is. The view is so pretty!

Found this adorable kitchen table at West Elm, got it for a steal!

Ken will flip if he finds out I posted this but how cute is he with Oliver. We are enjoying Christmas breakfast relaxing at our table in our kitchen. This is a first!! And yes we wear matching Christmas PJ's, total nerds!!!!

                                                                          2013

I can picture the window seat. I have a feeling this will be my favorite spot in the house. Oliver will go nuts squirrel watching. I am starting my search for the perfect fabric to have the cushions made. I think a trip to Calico Corner is approaching.

More dust and hard work we conquered the walls, trim is up and sanded the floor. Ken is applying the first coast of paint. This paint rocks. We highly recomend it. I read about it on a DIY blog. You can find it online.

The last picture is our super tiny powder room. During the kitchen renovation we had to gut it. It turned out amazing. This is another story, kind of a horror story which I will tell later along with pictures.

Here is our current To Do list:

finish painting and sealing the floor
finish the door trim and paint
wainscoting on ceiling with beams
tile sink and stove walls, white subway tile
install ceiling lights, check out www.schoolhouseelectric.com
window seat and cushions
FINITO!

Next weekend we are going to start the window seat. Will update soon!

What's new this week in store & online!

The summer is a time to wind down a little bit -- the Design House is closed until August, we are concentrating on refilling our spaces and getting reengergized.

This week, we have a few favorites back in our online store and the shop is full of some great pieces this week.

Here are our new finds for the week...

Our favorite metal sign is back in our online store in a big way!  This reproduction of a gas station sign is one of our favorite words!   Check it out {here}

Our wood beaded chandelier is $249 and a customer favorite.  It's been tough getting them back in, but they are here now online!

Interior Decoration Competing Philosophies

Interior Decoration .I've always had an interest in philosophy, but lately I'm passionate about it. I tend to spend any free time I have studying the words and thoughts that are the foundation of our culture. (This is part of the reason why I haven't been blogging as much). Unfortunately, I find "philosophy" isn't a great conversation starter with most people. So, I was glad to find this today.

Oooohhhh Atlanta!

January and July…January and July.

January is the month we purchase next years Christmas items…(see blog post about the Christmas buying), and July is back to Atlanta to find all of our art, accessories, and gift items, to carry us through the fall at the Design House.

It's always fun and exciting to see what new colors are trending and whats new in the marketplace.
The best news is Amy and I have a blast shopping and couldn't compliment each other more in our purchasing styles… Amy is a little more decoratory..high design, (oh and anything that has a horse on it….hence our great horse art collection) and me, I’m a bit more funky, and yet oddly practical.

Mix that all together, and you have the Design House.

Amazingly enough, we really do just run around and buy everything we love, and it always seems to fall together as if we had some sort of a master plan.

So off we go…. We’ll send back pics of our favorites so you can see what awesome new stuff is coming in!

Interior Decoration Personal Memorial

Interior Decoration  (photo via Happy Chic)This week I find myself asking, what is the appropriate response to the passing of an ingenious artist? I was sad to read of the passing of Cy Twombly on Tuesday. Strange that I wrote about him just recently and discovered that I was introducing his work to many of you. Well, yesterday I felt called to visit the Twombly museum here in Houston, as a

HOW TO WORK FOR A PSYCHIC BOSS: “The Fifth of 5 Questions You Must Ask Yourself When Determining if You Are Working for a Psychic” By Scott Hathcock

Scott Hathcock
“The Fifth of 5 Questions You Must Ask Yourself When Determining if You Are Working for a Psychic”

Well, here we are at the end. I promised five questions and I am delivering on that promise.  Some business and motivational books would even have me over deliver and surprise you with a sixth question, but I’m not going to.  Instead, I’m going to actually address this last question to you and not toward your boss.

5. Are you the one who is actually psychic?

The answer is, yes. You actually have the potential to be all the time.  And, I would go as far as to say that you have witnessed firsthand your own psychic abilities.  Maybe you’ve done it while focusing on your kids, your parents, your dog, or your work, but you have successfully done it before.  My hope is you’ll now recognize it and capitalize on your new found gift, scale it across your life.  But, for now, do me the favor of not getting too excited and start channeling for other people in your life.  Let’s leave that to the experts.  You focus on you and I’ll focus on me.  But, let’s encourage one another because we are human and it’s nice to hear, an “atta-boy” every now and then.  Believe it or not we are making a difference in each others lives by setting good examples for one another.

As you may have guessed by now, my psychic boss is also my wife of 16 years, Kiersten.  We run a little furniture company called Mod Mom Furniture.  Her personal awakening has been a process that has taken over the last four years.  It was just as shocking to me as it was to her, to wake up one day and discover that we weren’t the only people in our bedroom. That spirit, mostly kids, came to her on a regular basis to relay messages to those here on earth.  I fought really hard against this at first but I’ve now seen the difference it’s made in the lives of others.  Particularly, I’ve seen the difference it’s made in the lives of parents who have lost their child.  Her strong compassion, in her own awakening, even compelled her to publicly put herself out there and start a nonprofit organization called The Little Light Project. I won’t even pretend to understand what she does or how she takes on the weight of such sadness.  When I ask, she would simply explain as I have explained to you that she is just a conduit.

Well, I am now a student of hers.  Not in the sense of my trying to become a psychic medium, but in the sense of my learning how to listen to and believe in my gut.  As I’ve stated Barnes and Nobles had no book for what I’ve been through with her.

Oh, the amount of stress and anxiety I must have put my family through over the years trying to play this game when intuitively I knew it was wrong.   What did it get me? After 16+ years of corporate games and ego maneuvering, I’ve was laid off four times and fired twice.  I’ve suffered a TIA (mini-stoke) in my 30’s.  And, I’ve even been bankrupt.

But, now because I’ve learned from my psychic boss, I have found a new sense of freedom, living and trusting in my own intuition-- all that other stuff is just color to my canvas.  Those stats were just life lessons that got me back on my intended path.  I now design kid’s furniture in my spare time and only work for people who make me a better person.

If you should be so fortunate to have a psychic boss too, all I ask is that you not tell them that I gave away their trade secrets.  Rather, you quiet the EGO, listen and observe from their ways.  They are human just like you.  No, really they are just like you.

HOW TO WORK FOR A PSYCHIC BOSS: “The Fourth of 5 Questions You Must Ask Yourself When Determining if You Are Working for a Psychic” By Scott Hathcock

“The Fourth of 5 Questions You Must Ask Yourself When Determining if You Are Working for a Psychic”

If I didn’t lose you after that last post, then I will assume you are in for the long haul.  If I did lose you after the last post, but you couldn’t stop yourself from reading this follow-up post, then let me address you now.  If that last post was polarizing then this post promises to be humanizing, because it focuses on the human ego.

4.Do you find your boss to be ego-centric and having to be always right?

If you find that the answer is “yes,” then your boss is not psychic.  If you recall in our last blog,

“The Third of 5 Questions You Must Ask Yourself When Determining if You Are Working for a Psychic” by Scott Hathcock

I touched on the fact that you were not here on this earth to be right all the time, because if you are right all the time you learn nothing.  I think I even used an explanation mark on that sentence to stress that I was screaming.

What I have learned from my psychic boss is that in removing your ego from the equation or task at hand it allows for clearer thought.  The tricky thing is, knowing the difference between.  Here are some simple ways to help you determine which is which.

1.       EGO fuels embarrassment

2.       EGO feeds anger

3.       EGO feeds on fear and self-doubt

4.       EGO can never admit its sorry and made a mistake

5.       EGO has to be spelled in all caps

6.       EGO is LOUD and determined to be heard

7.       EGO looks outside at others to determine its self-worth by determining others are less than

8.       EGO makes you think you always need to be correct

9.       EGO is trying to get me to me to list ten items on this list to fuel its EGO

Now, the difference…

1.       Intuition feeds you what is best for your personal journey, right now.

2.       Intuition comes from an higher place and not a hired space you occupy

3.       Intuition is soft and a consistent voice

4.       Intuition is the voice of your authentic self

That’s it.  It has nothing to do with making anyone else feel smaller, less important, or less valued.  It has nothing to do with you looking larger than life, more important, or more valued at work.  It just has to do with being who you were intended to be at this present moment.

Yikes! But, that is why you can trust your intuition.  It takes all the bullshit out of the equation and just focuses on you being you.

Case in point, a true psychic will never tell you that the information they receive is actually coming from them.  They will tell you that they are channeling the information.  They are just a conduit for the information.  No offense, but they don’t really care if what they say resonates with you or that you even take it to heart.  They will most likely forget everything they’ve said the moment you walk out the door. All that really matters to them is that they perform their job to their highest good and relay to you whatever it they are supposed to say.  In essence, they are UPS and just delivering the package to your door. It’s up to you to take it inside and open it.  Scary huh?  Now, do they love positive feedback? Of course they do, they are human too and have an ego.  But, when they are really heart-centered psychics, what they really love is when YOU learn how to listen to and use your own intuition.

And, they love it when stop calling them and asking when you’ll find love, buy this car or take this trip? Once you are able to separate EGO from your intuition, the choices are clear.

Back to how this relates to your boss.   If your boss is psychic, their management style for you will be like that of the heart-centered psychic I’ve described.  They will offer you sage advice when appropriate to channel on your behalf, but they will also look to boost your confidence so that you start trusting your own gut instincts.  You will find that they too are put-off by the constant nagging of the mundane day-to-day business questions like,

“Should I fax this now?”

“Should I wait to call my client?”

“Should I go on this business trip?”

They only want you to succeed.  But, will they fire you? Yes, just ask me.

And when they do, hopefully it was a life lesson for both of you and not just for them.  If I have learned anything from my psychic boss it is that in the past I have not always answered honestly the question I `have tasked of you, “Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?” I have done things out of fear. I have done jobs for just the money. I have taken jobs to look better to others. I have been both the youngest Vice President and the oldest in a company and I stand before you now having learned “life lessons” and not failures that got me where I am today.  Now, telling the story of how I got here is half the fun.  My EGO even enjoys it and has accepted it as part of my life’s journey.  It even laughs with me.  EGO is not all bad; it makes us who we are and actually wants the best for us.  It sometimes just has an issue of knowing when to step back and recalibrate.  EGO is having me believe that you are still reading this blog and encouraging me to continue writing it, but the truth is I’m doing this for me.  I needed to be reminded of this just as much as I thought you did.

HOW TO WORK FOR A PSYCHIC BOSS: “The Third of 5 Questions You Must Ask Yourself When Determining if You Are Working for a Psychic” By Scott Hathcock

“The Third of 5 Questions You Must Ask Yourself When Determining if You Are Working for a Psychic”

Wow, I tell you the water cooler chatter about this series has been intense! If you should choose to come out as a follower of this blog please do.  It is what your gut would have you do. And, I would embrace this phase in your life (of new found freedom) and engage in a healthy dialogue with other coworkers. But, before you start, do ask yourself, “Is this healthy banter something I should be doing right now at work?” Once you figure out the answer to that question, you can proceed.

If I may be so bold, you can even use this as an ice-breaker,

“Have you caught any of that blog series written by that Scott Hathcock?”

If their response is “no,” then no harm, no foul. You are not in any danger and they find this blog only when they are truly ready.  If on the other hand they say “yes,” I would proceed with caution as it might be a work trap.  So, please follow-up with…

“Isn’t he funny?” As opposed to, “So, do you think our boss is psychic?”

Now, on to the third question….

3. Do you often catch your boss speaking aloud and asking questions to no one?

For a longtime I believed there were a lot of people out there talking to the dead or their spirit guides.  I was shocked at how comfortable the public was becoming in this activity.  I was even crediting people like my boss and “The Long Island Medium” for making this practice more socially acceptable.

Curse you Bluetooth!

It turned out that “Joe Public” was only using wireless hands free devices, so my idea of our having raised our psychic collective consciousness has evaporated for the moment.  Oh well.  But, it did give me the idea which I will share for your own development, so hold tight.

For now, let’s go back to the topic of your boss.  I will often go into my boss’ office and find her looking off into the distance. I’m typically catching her just at the tail end of asking a question.  Does this sound familiar?

This type of scenario always throws me off because I feel as though I am interrupting a conversation.  Furthermore, I am usually waiting for a verbal response to come back to her through the speaker phone or an indication she is listening to her cellphone.  What I have found is that she is simply asking a question aloud to herself.  Saying something aloud, or even writing it down, allows for our subconscious to understand the weight of our question and that we are “dead” serious in our asking.   No pun intended and this is where I’m going to be highly controversial.

Whether you choose to believe this or not, real psychics have the ability to talk to the dead.  Here’s how it works, those who have passed share insights to psychics making it possible for them to share information to those who have asked or know things for themselves that they had no reason for knowing.  Got it! Now, just because the universe likes to play games and keep things interesting, not all “psychics” have faithfully answered the most important question of themselves that I have asked of you: “Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?”  Thereby, their actions and advice sometimes give the word “psychic” a bad rap in today’s business setting.  With that clarification, I am now going to let out a little psychic secret that I’ve learned from my boss.

The practice of really listening to your own intuition=a psychic listening to the dead and getting answers for you.

I see you turning over in your proverbial corporate grave, but it’s true.

“There’s no place for that kind of psychic mumbo-jumbo talk in this office!”

Well, you may be right, but do note that the after the world’s oldest profession, a psychic’s job ranks a close second I’m sure.  Can you say that about your current job?

I’m not recommending you take your lunch hour to go visit a psychic right now, but what I am saying is that you have these same psychic tools at your reach that she does.  And, by calling it “your intuition” to others when arguing your case or stating your reasoning in business, I have provided you with a legitimate and rational answer that IS acceptable in the business world.  Which leads me to address, where does intuition come?  Call it what you will, but you have a team around you ALL THE TIME just feeding your intuition.  If you choose to believe me or not, it doesn’t matter to me as long as you know you have your own “intuition” to help you, that’s what’s important.  Your intuition will always provide you with the right answers to experience whatever it is that you are intended to experience.  Let me say that again.

“Your intuition will always provide you with the right answers to experience whatever it is that you are intended to experience.”  Scott Hathcock, author of “How to Work for a Psychic Boss”

Notice it doesn’t say, “Your intuition will always provide you with the right answers to be right all the time.” Why is that? Because if you are right all the time, you are not learning anything! You are here to learn something even if the lesson is hard to hear, like “You are not good at your current job and you need to move on.”  And, in my next blog we will address your boss’ intuition vs. ego and how to tell the difference.

So, back to the Bluetooth and a promise I made earlier.  This is an exercise I want you to try right now.   Think of a question you want answered that you’ve been struggling with.  Without any reservation ask it aloud.  Do be mindful of where you are and for the sake of your coworkers, you may want to slant it toward something business-y!

Did you do it? No, not in your head!  You have to say it aloud, committed to hear the answer back.

That’s better.  Did you get a gut reaction of either a yes or no? Or, did I forget that you need to ask it as a yes or no question? Anyway, rethink your question in its simplest form and ask it again.

Now, at this point, I’m sure you have received some unwanted attention from your coworkers, so I need you to do the following:

1.       Look them straight in the eye

2.       Using your right hand, tap on the inside of your right ear like your tapping on a Bluetooth earpiece

3.       Smile.

You are now covered.

Note to reader: Practice this exercise a lot in private and in public.  The more you practice in public allows to better master the “cover-up.”  Master the ability to ask yourself complex questions in their simplest form.  If you have no question, revert back to the 3rd blog post and ask aloud, “Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?” It is truly amazing how that one question covers so much ground.

Note to reader too: My psychic boss has just told me that you can also ask your question silently in your head for the same results, but I think she is more advanced then we are.

HOW TO WORK FOR A PSYCHIC BOSS - “The Second of 5 Questions You Must Ask Yourself When Determining if You Are Working for a Psychic” by Scott Hathcock

Scott Hathcock
(Works for a psychic medium/furniture CEO)
Since I am finding this therapeutic myself and sense you are enjoying this series, let us continue.  I realize that I’m not giving you any time to digest each blog before I post the next.  And, I’m not giving you anytime to practice what we’ve already learned.   Hopefully, you are not even having time to question my authority on this topic.  It just feels right to you, so you are diving head first into this next post. Maybe that’s not a bad thing?

Unintentionally, this leads me to the second question you have to ask yourself about your boss.

2. Does she make business decisions based on her intuition? Better yet, does she have the gall to ask you what your “gut” says when you ask her a question about what you should do?

As an observer, this process of decision-making could seem rash to you and even off-putting, but why? Why does she do that? Why does she seem to not toil over every business decision she makes? Why does she not stress?

That crazy-haired Malcolm Gladwell wrote about it in his book, “Blink” and he did it without ever capitalizing his book title—that’s how confident he was in his writing.  A common observation of Gladwell’s is that some folks follow their instincts making, to the untrained eye, “rash” decisions and advance into victory. While others can’t seem to do one thing that is right.  He has obviously witnessed a psychic boss at some point because I’ve observed this same characteristic in mine.

I know what you’re saying now, and shame on you again, so go back and read my second blog post.   You want to learn how to do this too.  You want to learn how to live this way.

Based solely on my observations of my psychic boss, here are three questions you must ask yourself to see if you are ready:

  1. Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?

  2.
  3.
Okay, maybe I overshot the moon on that one, but the business books I’ve read always have you doing things in three’s.  There is really only one question.  So, let’s let that single question sit with you for a moment.  “Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?” I used to let this one question bug the shit out of me because of its magnitude.  Like an onion, this question has so many layers that will apply to your life, but since we have set a course for just focusing on your boss and job let’s keep our thoughts in the office.

If you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, your gut answer and response is always correct.  By the way, it’s also called your intuition.  And if your boss is psychic too, she is using this form of decision-making all the time because she trusts it.  In fact, she trusts it so much that when the outcome turns out to be different to what she anticipated, she will go as far to say, “Well, that was a good life lesson.”

WHAT THE WHAT!?!?! She doesn’t even worry about the business consequences? The answer is “no.” The reason is she has asked question number one of herself countless times.  Because she has comfort in knowing she is doing what she is supposed to be doing, even a mistake and life lesson to be learned is part of her journey.  This is some heady stuff believe me and if you need to just take a deep breathe right now please go ahead, I will wait.

Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing? This simple question hopefully removes all illegal and unjust actions from your head because my attorney asked me to mention that.

Q: “Should I borrow some copy paper to take home?”
A: Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?

Q: ”Should I be cold calling a list of clients right now?”
A: Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?

Q: “Should I be firm with my offer?”
A: Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?

Q: “Should I ask for a raise?”
A: Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?

Get in the habit of asking yourself this question about the little things and then try scaling it across the rest of your life.  You will find that if you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, you are aligned. And, when you are aligned your intuition is never wrong.  Sometimes you may have “life lessons” but you should feel really good about those too because you recognized them as lessons and not as mistakes.

The Look For Less...At Lucketts

Vintage items and looks online have become very popular.  One Kings Lane is a good example of new and old items that are updated daily.  We often check and get excited when we see similar and awesome items that come into the store and happen to be much cheaper.

Example: This fish drawing for $149 online.

Fish Drawing, 1956

Our Example: Dealer Pat from Twig House brought in several lithograph prints ranging from $35-$65. Of course they sold right away!
