On the road with the Cowbell Kitchen

On the road with the Cowbell Kitchen.  Where does Chef Cher get her goodies?

Follow her this week on a trip as she buys ingredients for her food truck.  She will be serving up tasty, locally-sourced foods at this weekend's Design House open house.

Every week leading up to Friday morning I spend my days lovingly traveling, schlepping, and filling up my Mini's backside with local treasures! One of my favorite stops is Tudor Hall Farm.

Tudor Hall Farm has been a Grantham family farm since 1763, amazing huh? In 1989 Bill and Phyllis Grantham diversified and started Tudor Hall Farm Market. They produce a list of fine products from free range eggs, anti-biotic free beef, a variety of produce and to the delicious sugar cured ham I use on our biscuit sandwich.

Great combination of flavors to bake the ham with, yummy! Simple, season the ham S&P, fill the bottom with cider then cover with foil and bake 20 minutes per pound or until internal temperature reaches 170 degrees. If needed add more hard cider, hopefully you didn't drink it all. Slice and enjoy.

It's all good at Tudor Hall, picking up a meat order via the honor system, ole fashion leave the check in a peanut butter jar method, giant smile!

The honor system
Oh my gosh, do I see sunshine? yeah!!!! gotta run, I mean drive to Chambersburg, PA for our dairy products. To be continued.....

Come visit me this weekend. I will be serving up delish food Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm. Looking forward to the Design House extravaganza!

Love my job,
Cher

PS - I also can take orders for fresh Easter ham.  Stop by the food truck & let me know.

This weekend's featured soup will be Roasted Tomato.  I'll be serving a hot pot sandwich of pulled local pork sandwich with a side of coleslaw.

Pastries & Treats for the weekend will be:
mini red velvet cupcakes
chocolate chip biscotti
rustic apple tarts
almond coffee cake
Cher's Ham & Biscuit Sandwich

Who's Who.....Meet Lisa!

History buff, photographer, super-mom!   Meet our loveable Lisa!

Here is a little about Lisa and how she came to be a dealer at The Old Lucketts Store.
Lisa hand-painted this armoire

I wanted to be Secretary of State when I was little. I have NO idea why, except that Henry Kissinger was on the news a lot and I really liked peace. They say that the middle child is often a peace-maker.  I don’t know about that, but being sandwiched between a beautiful, perfect-cheerleader older sister and a gorgeous, hell-on-wheels younger sister left me to play the role of the middle sister – too thin, gawky, a nerdy bookworm who alphabetized her fiction and dewey-decimaled her non-fiction. I was always socially awkward and scatter-brained. Mom would say, “Girl, you’d lose your head if it wasn’t attached.” This is still true.

I didn’t grow up to be Secretary of State, but became an accountant instead. Math was my worst subject so this might not have been the best choice of careers, but it was the ‘80s…the era of “Dallas” and “Dynasty” and get rich, rich, rich. There was no talk of “follow your passion,” or “do what you’re good at” in the 80’s. So I got a job as a Regional Assistant Controller at a major international waste disposal company...every little girl’s dream. I was pretty good at it, I guess, despite my math-deficit. But my husband and I had a son by now, and I really wanted to be a stay at home mom so I finally figured out a way to make the budget work, and I quit. Then I had twin girls. Then I lost my mind.

Lisa's antique stained glass find
When the twins were in Kindergarten, I met my friend Jenny (a Lucketts dealer – The Fickle Flea) at the bus stop. We were both broke, and with 7 kids between the two of us, decided to start fixing up furniture that we found on the curb or the thrift store, and selling it at the flea market. We did that for a while, then graduated to getting our stuff at auction, and eventually found our way to Lucketts. I quickly realized that this place was different, and the people were different… but in a good way. These people would lose their heads if they weren’t attached, too, and that was ok.

My son graduated college this year and the twins will be graduating high school in June. They have grown up at Lucketts. It’s our family, too…our second home; my “happy place” when the jack-in-the-box surprises of life scared me too much…a place where I found friendship, fulfillment, and finally, a little peace.

***Lisa brings a lot of wonderful finds in to the shop, including great antique chairs, books and ephemera, upholstered pieces, and decorative pieces.  Antique pieces that don't keep their original finishes are all hand-painted by Lisa.  A wonderful photographer, Lisa has a great eye that she brings to her vignettes, and she always keeps her space fresh. Don't forget to visit Lisa's space on the first floor of the shop on the left side of the main room.  Here are a few of Lisa's finds:

March Design House....it's all in the details

The March house is almost there!  We have all new furniture and accessories, and the house is ready for spring this Friday, Sat. & Sun. (3/1, 2 & 3).

We've been trying to be more diligent about taking pics through the process of styling the house.
This month, we have all new furniture - kitchen islands, dining tables, refractory cabinets, sideboards & consoles, and upholstery.  We thought we'd take you through a few of the details of the new pieces....it was these details that caught our eye earlier this year and started the wheels spinning.

We're setting up this table as a bar in the sun room.  What caught our eye was the bolt detail on the crosspieces on the legs.  The look is pure reclaimed and industrial.  Do you love it too?

This is a coffee table we're using upstairs.  I love these zinc star accents!  We're pairing this with some of our nautical accents.

The wood grain on stain treatment on this new table caught our eye.

Details like drawer construction are SO important, especially so in furniture.  It's good to check the woods used on the drawer fronts AND the woods used to construct the insides of the drawers too.

Our bar cabinet downstairs has great carving detail.  We're really happy with the quality of furniture we found in January.  This new company is based on the East Coast, which makes the wait times for furniture shipments MUCH better....no more waiting 8 to 14 months for a piece!

Lots of great new upholstery this March.  Check out the embroidery detail on this chair.   The shape of the cushion is lovely too.  Pure spring!

We asked you on our Facebook page this week, and it seems like we have a lot of nail head trim fans out there.

Dark brown piping details are so crisp and clean on the sofa upstairs.  Yes, those really are giant mustache hooks!

The luxurious tufting on our chair upstairs makes me want to curl up and read a book.

We love the modern-looking silver nail head trim on this upholstered headboard

Simple nail head trim works with this feminine and curvy oversize chair beautifully.

Here is an example of Amy's laying, tucking & primping the perfect throw.  Even a detail like how you lay your throw over the arm of a sofa can bring your design up a level and make it look extra rich.

What details do you feel really make a piece of furniture or a room?

What's left?  Well, we have a few cabinets of smalls to put away....

...and then it's on to the front porch!

Just so you don't think we just take pictures of unfinished things, here are a few rooms from the March Design House....almost there!

Join us this week on the blog as we finish The March Design House.  Better yet, join us this weekend - Friday, Saturday & Sunday 10am-5pm for the March Design House.

Interior Decoration Must See TV.

Interior Decoration I'm anxiously awaiting the premiere of "Secrets from a Stylist", on Saturday! I don't know about many of you, but I sort of gave up on design on television a few years ago. Compared to what goes on in the blog world, decorating shows really fall flat. That's why I'm ready to see Emily Henderson (winner of Design Star) at work. Her work is modern, fun, and aesthetically

House of the Week

It's for sale - listing here.

Letters to Lucketts....Running a Creative Business

Hey everyone and Happy Monday!  The Design House is coming along.  We've knocked out several rooms over the weekend to get ready for the Design House this weekend.  We'll be shooting some more pictures to share Monday morning, so look for those later in the day.

Here was some background and advice Suzanne gave a few months ago in a post that appeared in Miss Mustard Seed's blog in September.  We think it was interesting and gives you some more background about the shop and about us, so we thought we'd share it today...

Hi, I’m Suzanne from Lucketts Store in Leesburg VA. I’m happy to help out with a post about my start and my humble thoughts on business.
Suzanne at auction. 'Nuff said!

As a child I never stopped selling all my stuff. While other kids were playing jump rope on the playground, I basically had a roadside stand set up by my book bag selling whatever toys made the cut that day.  My mom could never figure out where all my stuff went and why, as an 8 year old in the 60′s, I always seemed to have money. So it was kind of ironic as I grew up, that I just couldn’t seem to figure out what I would be good enough at to make a living. DAH!

I was a stay at home mom living with my husband and 6 month old son, in a tiny unfurnished apartment in Ashburn, when I discovered Tilletts auction. I was overwhelmed with the cool retro stuff that I thought was amazing and was going for no money. Fortunately I also had no money, so it was a match made in heaven. We eventually moved to an old farmhouse where I would fill the barn with my auction treasures and have epic barn sales, then a tiny booth in an antique mall (yay! I was sure that was it..I hit the big time), then I started working for free, in exchange for space at My Wits End, an antique store outside of Leesburg.

My husband saw great potential in the abandoned building up the road and, since things were going pretty well at My Wits End we decided to give it a go, and The Old Lucketts Store was born.

I could go on from now til next Tuesday with all that goes into owning your own store, but for now I’ll stick to the highlights…
  • Grow one step at a time with in your own comfort zone.  It’s easy to get ahead of yourself and want to become bigger better faster before you really get a grip on what you are doing.
  • I am always in favor of business relationships being based on a win-win.  The more everybody you deal with respects you, and knows you are looking out for their best interest as well as you own, the longer and more solid relationships you will build.
  • Don’t go into debt.  This really goes along with growing one step at a time, its also called don’t get too big for your britches.  I started out with maybe a hundred dollars. I would go to auction, buy up the box lots that were going for a dollar…pick out the the items with some interest, clean them up, display them to the best of my ability, and hopefully turn my hundred into two or three hundred. I have done this thousands of times over the last 20 years.  When you own everything outright, you can’t get into too much trouble.
  • Always sell your inventory….do not keep it for your self…that is not a business, that’s shopping!  This may seem unbelievable, but whatever I want for my house I generally buy from other people, I do not keep my own stuff.
  • There is a great saying “without a goal, you have no direction.”  I always had one clear thought: to have a neat old place on the side of the road, where you hoped you’d have a great find …  and you did! That’s it…my direction was as simple as that.
  • Be ridiculously nice to your customers, they are your best asset.
  • Lastly, it is often difficult to find balance when you are running your own business and have a family.  Do your best, don’t beat yourself up…..an enjoy both as much as you possibly can, you’re lucky

New in the shop and online this week...

Several new items in the shop this week Fresh Off the Wagon, including some beautiful cabinets and more jewelry!

We're also trying to coordinate some of the items from our online store with items that will be in the March Design House this weekend (March 1, 2, &3).  We have some new curtain panels that we'll be featuring in the house that you can also purchase online.
Here are a few items from The Old Lucketts Store this week.

Jennifer brought in a bunch of new jewelry.  I love how she's used old photos to display the necklaces on this weathered old shutter.  Beautiful!

Suzanne and Amy brought in a great large table that seats six.  The top is natural wood, while the legs are a distressed green.  The girls paired it with some chairs slip covered in neutral fabrics.

Claudia brought a great pine cabinet in the shop this week.  She has some great antique pieces, doesn't she?  UPDATE:  This didn't last long.  It's already been snapped up!

In the main room, we now have a great large glass front cabinet in a lovely distressed red painted finish.  Oh, the books and fun things you could store in here!

****NEW ONLINE THIS WEEK****

Two new styles of curtains are now online!

Our new linen damask curtains are light, airy, delicate, and oh-so-French looking!  The curtain features a tone on tone grey design.

We love our new Peaceful jute curtains which will be featured in one of the rooms in the March Design House.  We love how you can easily pull the greens or brown out of the pattern to match with accessories, or you can let the colors take a back seat and let the intricate pattern be the focal point in your room.

We also have two new votives this week, our 8" and 4" Artic glass votives.  Amy & Suzanne fell in love with the unusual treatment on the glass, and these look great alone or in groups.

Thanks for checking out our new items in the shop and online this week.  Have a great weekend!
