elisabeth and fairies.

{ source + where to buy = the enchanted door}

Elisabeth has paper poms in her room...they hang right below the air vent...

The other night they were blowing around and she thought there were ghost in her room.

I assured her that it was just the vent, and in my best mom voice told her that, "there are no such things as ghosts."

I got crickets and a blank stare.

I then told her maybe there weren't ghost flying around, maybe there were fairies in her room.

This time I got big eyes and a smile.

I then told her we should check for pixie dust in the morning.

There may or may not have been glitter in her room when she woke up :)

AN ELEPHANTS SAD STORY..
ONE WE CAN CHANGE

Please re blog and share this story.. Its very important

Mali the elephant at the Manila Zoo

PLEASE TODAY I ASK FOR YOUR HELP..

A heartfelt story.. Please everyone who reads this blog must help us change this..

The Story:

Imagine, if you can, a youngster, shipped to a strange and frightening place, never to see her family or home ever again. But no alert is ever issued, no reward for her safe return offered. This is because the victim is an elephant, Mali, the lone elephant at the Manila Zoo.
This nursing baby was taken from Sri Lanka in 1974 and has spent the last 35 years in a small, concrete pen.

Try to imagine living your whole life in a room the size of a bedroom, seeing the same four walls every day. You'd have no friends or companionship and nothing whatsoever to pass the time or provide you with comfort. You'd never get to leave. That's exactly what life is like for Mali.
Mali is a mere shell of the magnificent being she's meant to be. She is the only captive elephant in the Philippines, and she needs to be retired without delay.

The Office of the President has issued a directive stating that Mali should be transferred to a sanctuary after an evaluation of her health. A sanctuary can offer her thousands of acres to roam, ponds to bathe in, fresh vegetation to eat, foraging opportunities and, most importantly, the company of many other elephants. But despite the fact that PETA has offered to cover the entire cost of the transfer, authorities are stalling PETA's efforts to faciliate Mali's move to a sanctuary. Take action now to free Mali!

World-Renowned Elephant Veterinarian: Mali Is Suffering

Mali the elephant at the Manila Zoo

Following a directive from President Benigno Aquino III to evaluate Mali, the 38-year-old solitary elephant at the Manila Zoo, and move her to a sanctuary, a new medical report on her condition reveals that she is suffering from potentially fatal foot problems and profound loneliness and that the only way to ensure her physical and psychological well-being is to relocate her to an elephant sanctuary, where she can be cared for by experts. Paid for by PETA, internationally recognized elephant expert Dr. Mel Richardson has just published his report from a visual medical examination of Mali. View the report here.

No Veterinary Care

In the report, Richardson cites chronic pressure sores open to contamination as well as foot ailments, including cracked nails, overgrown cuticles, and cracked pads—all three of which can harbor bacteria and become infected. Such foot problems are the leading cause of death in captive elephants. The zoo’s veterinarians admitted to Richardson that they lack the means to trim Mali’s cuticles, and they have not yet accepted PETA’s offer of assistance. Richardson’s examination is the most complete physical evaluation that Mali has ever received, but she has still not had a blood workup.

Suffering and Alone

While Richardson is concerned about Mali’s lack of veterinary care, he is particularly troubled by her loneliness and the extreme psychological stress that it causes:
“My major concern is that Mali is alone,” writes Richardson in the report. “Female elephants in their natural habitat never leave the herd. They are in constant communication with the other members of their family. Mali’s social and psychological needs are being neglected at the Manila Zoo. Even the best intentions … cannot replace these needs, which can only be met by the companionship of other elephants.” He concludes, “In my experience, even elephants who have been alone for more than 20 years integrate well with other elephants when moved to a sanctuary.”

All elephants who are confined alone and denied everything that is natural and important to them suffer psychologically. The frustrations of captivity and lack of companionship often lead to abnormal, neurotic, and even self-destructive behavior called “zoochosis” or “stereotypy”—in Mali’s case, incessant pacing. A growing number of progressive zoos—including several in the U.S. and the U.K.—have realized that they cannot possibly fulfill the complex needs of elephants and have closed their elephant exhibits. The government of India has ordered that all elephants in zoos be transferred to government-run sanctuaries and reserves.

What You Can Do to Help

Petition Letter:

Please expedite Mali's transfer to a sanctuary in Thailand
Dear Secretary Alcala,
As I'm sure you're aware, in her current environment, Mali is denied socialization, stimulation, room to explore, and everything else that is natural and important to her. Mali endures intense confinement, loneliness, boredom, and isolation in an area a fraction of the size of her natural habitat.

But you have a chance to change that. Will you immediately work with PETA in facilitating Mali's transfer to a sanctuary, as ordered by a directive from the office of the president?

The Manila Zoo has a chance to join a growing number of progressive zoos—including several in the U.S. and the U.K.—who have realized that they cannot possibly fulfill the complex needs of elephants and have closed their elephant exhibits. The government of India has ordered that all elephants in zoos be transferred to government-run sanctuaries.

PLEASE SIGN THE FOLLOWING PETITION...

Please help give Mali the life she truly deserves.

Sincerely,

Pete's new space

More moves this past week over at the shop.

It's been really exciting to watch, but a lot of work for our vendors to move and rearrange their spaces.

Pete's space is coming along quite nicely.  The back room now has his signature hip industrial feel mixed with lots of great metal, leather/fur, and wood pieces.

Aside from lots of great decorating ideas and vignettes, I always find one {or two or three} really special pieces I would just love to take home with me.

Pete's space has two great industrial cabinets in pink this week!  This is the smaller of the two with 36 drawers.  The larger version has around 60 compartments - how much fun is that?

A  few salvaged stained glass pieces catch the light streaming in the windows.  Pete's added some great metal accents, from this horse head, to the tin star, to metal light fixtures.  Several furniture pieces are made from reclaimed wood.

Adore the lodge look or need some ideas for a man cave?  Pete has several new items, including antlers and hides that he picked up on a recent trip.

Glass accents include these bright green beauties, as well as antique glass door knob sets.

Back in the lobby area, the only remaining sign of Pete is a pedal car high up on a ledge {it looks so cool I think everyone is afraid to move it}.  He's totally moved out and two of Marian's monstrous pieces have moved in and we are starting to fill in the spaces as we wait anxiously for Marian's new milk paint line.

Marian recently unveiled a new color in her paint line called Lucketts Green.  Here is a sneak peek of one of her finished pieces:

{source}

The color was inspired by the green color of The Old Lucketts Store.  We think she nailed the color!  What do you think?

Marian's milk paint won't be widely available until August.  The Old Lucketts Store will have it first.  We are anxiously awaiting our shipment scheduled to arrive in July {and we'll let you know when it arrives}.  In the meantime, you can get your fix by checking out some of the videos Marian has posted to YouTube detailing how she mixes and uses her milk paints.

Certain Situations Call For The Muppets. Don't You Think?

I think I'm over tired after a hectic day of many work hours and not enough time to just 'be'.

Situations like this call for fun and frivolity, so I found some.

What can I say..... you know I love the muppets.

What could be better than a few classical chickens and Gonzo!

You gotta laugh, it's one of the things that truly make a house a home I reckon.

Store to Abode Fridays #17 - glass front cabinets

For this Store to Abode Friday, I'm focusing on glass front cabinets.

These cabinets are beautiful and functional ways to show off your treasures.

We tend to have these at The Old Lucketts Store quite often; right now we have several beauties in various sizes and finishes.

I wanted to give you a few ideas for how to display items in these cabinets, including a few places you can put glass front cabinets that you may not have thought about before.

Here is my inspiration photo, which also happens to be my favorite item in the store right now.  Amy & Suzanne found, restored, and repainted this seven foot beauty, which originally came from a ritzy New York furniture store.

I started thinking about how to accessorize and fill up these oversize pieces.  The more I looked for inspiration, the more I realized just how versatile these pieces are.

{1}  We love to use glass front cabinets to display our favorite collections.  Paint the inside back side of your cabinet to match your decor or add a little pop to draw the eye.

{2}  What a beautiful storage piece in this crisp white bathroom.  It behaves like built-ins or standard cabinets, but is a freestanding piece with tons more personality and style.

{3}  A cabinet off the dining room stores the special dishes and glassware normally reserved for entertaining.

{4}  Why hide your favorites in boxes?  A glass front cabinet in the bedroom is perfect for displaying a collection of favorite shoes.

{5}  This oversize cabinet provides tons of stylish storage in this workspace that doubles as a library.

Have a great weekend everyone!

INDIVIDUALITY WILL DRIVE FUTURE SALES IN BEDROOMS

Fitted  bedroom furniture was first introduced to offer storage solutions in a range of different styles. Initially the focus was on storage but as the market has grown the design element has become more important as homeowners  look to create a  personal space that is fashionable and stylish.
Despite this there are still  many companies that only offer a range of sliding doors, a limited solution in a world where people want a place they can come to at the end of the day to unwind, regroup and relax.
The latest trends indicate that  individuality in the bedroom will be key for the future.  The ability to mix colours, materials and textures as well as fitted and freestanding furniture  enables people to create a bedroom that is fresh and exciting.
New trends in bedroom design often echo those of the fashion world and follow kitchen design, hence the introduction of colour, glass and gloss finishes.  But that’s just the  beginning, coordinating fitted sliding doors with freestanding cabinets, dressing tables, even window seats , opens a whole new world of possibilities.
The consumers of tomorrow will not want everything to match, they will be looking to mix it up and create their own look  to enliven the bedroom and add interest.
This is a trend that will last because  homeowners can always change  pieces of furniture or add new pieces when the urge strikes or styles change.
Choice and flexibility will drive sales forward as consumers look to one supplier  to  mix and match finishes and design all of the furniture for the bedroom rather than just the fitted wardrobes.
