Behind the Scenes - Preparing for the Biggest, Baddest, & Best Spring Market Ever

It seems like last week I still had months left before the fair.  It hit me when I was doing the schedule for the shop and It's almost May...Reality check it's three weeks away and I hope all of you are excited as I am...The theme this year as BIGGER BADDER BETTER, those of you who know me know I will deliver!
I have been shopping, planning, shopping, calling, shopping, and drawing hundreds of schematics of who and where since December of last year (thank goodness I started then!) I truly have needed every minute of it. One would never know what all is involved, but rest assured I got this...
I spent the first few months in search of healthy food vendors (they don't exist) or pretty porta loo's (yea there not out there either)...So what I did come up with is Happy Feet a new food vendor this year who is a 501 organization (non-profit) to support children with down-syndrome..And realized the theme for the porta loo's is R-E-S-P-E-C-T....(you'll have to see this).
Also moving the Fair to the shop side this year gets rid of all the "NOs" that came with having it at the community center.  Come on, have you met us?  We hate that word...YES you can bring your dog (please clean up after them and watch them at all times!) YES we will have wine pouring/selling (thanks to Melissa from The Winery At La Grange).
So in a nutshell on 4/29 my leg/brain work is complete, and now the real stressful part starts.  What I like to call the "depending on other people stage".  The tents, the signs, the postcards, the dumpsters, the loos, etc., etc. to be delivered when they are supposed to, (ok so maybe Lisa was right I just may be a control freak - I like precise better but I think it's the same thing)..Not that this shows at all by me calling these people every Monday at 10am to make sure they haven't forgotten about us! (not really but almost).
So I am on brain break (refueling until May 14th) My son's 23rd birthday Happy B-Day Hunter!
From the 14th-till  the wee hours of the 20th, my fairytale will take form, so back to the theme:
  • BIGGER= 60 MORE SPACES ADDED (sold out)
  • BADDER=BIG NAME VENDORS (THE ONES YOU ARE READING ABOUT IN THE LATEST MAGAZINES AND BOOKS (you will have to come see who! we're giving a sneak peak for a few of them here on our blog)
  • BETTER= TBD.  I'LL AWAIT YOUR COMMENTS AFTERWARDS  ; )
With all this rambling I MUST say this..I would not have been able to pull this off with out the tremendous support I have received from my fellow Lucketts crew with kind encouraging words and faith in me....just to mention a few
  • Suzanne for having faith in me to pull this all off!
  • Anne stepping up at the counter when I am being transferred from the county office to permits to VDOT back to the county, sending faxes, and answering my cell phone about the color of the grommets on the banners all at the same time.
  • Ted for his intimate understanding of a condition he calls "fair on the brain"
  • A big FAT thanks to my magical computer goddess Emily..who I am not sure if she gets me or prays like hell she doesn't turn out like me! What she can do is hear the words that come out of my mouth, sorts them out, and puts it into action before I am even done...(do you know how hard this is?)
  • To my wonderful husband who strangely enough like Emily gets me, I dropped off a box of wood, glue and a few nails said what I needed and he puts his twist on it and voila!  --- a super cute 22' entrance gate for the Fair has been born! And for once again letting me borrow your 40' race car trailer to bring all of this to the shop..(and for you driving it and helping me unload) YOU'RE THE BEST!
So that's it for now....

Inspiration For The Weekend.

Apparently the weather is going to be dreadful this weekend: rain maybe even thunderstorms! If so, there's one space I would love to spend my Saturday at, reading, perhaps surfing the net and why not having a nap getting ready for a working week ahead starting this Sunday. It's exactly this one.

By the way, friends are very welcomed.

Royal Wedding Day!

It's finally here! Enjoy all of the coverage. Catherine Middleton looks exquisite today and Prince William equally handsome. Many blessings to them both as they enter into marriage.

Fearless Fantasy Friday...

I found this short and truthful quote the other day whilst browsing one of my favourite blogs Belle Maison...

“Most people start out wanting to go for their fantasy, but end up painting their walls dove-white.”

- Raymond Boozer

I so loved it, that it's inspired me to start a new regular (or semi-regular) post entitled 'Fearless Fantasy Fridays'.

These posts will be to feature rooms where people haven't 'chickened out' and resorted to playing it safe at the last moment.

'Feel the fear and do it anyway' is my motto (and also the name of a great book by Susan Jeffers for those who like motivational reading).

You only live once.... and at the very least could try ramping up your wall colour. An adventure into bold walls only needs a new can of paint or some new wallpaper if it goes wrong!

Not the end of the world.

And, if you felt like taking a risk with the furniture, who could resist gorgeous purple chairs and an oversized purple lamp?

Viva la fantasy!

She wants a  peaceful afternoon sipping mimosas while taking in the beautiful, serene Design House at Lucketts!  She wants to pick up something for herself...maybe a new pair of flip flops or a scarf ... but most of all she wants time to relax and be inspired.

The Design House WILL be open for you and your favorite mom on Mother's Day weekend.  Friday, Saturday, & Sunday - May 6th, 7th & 8th    10am to 5pm all three days.

Speaking of British Aristocracy....

Andrew and Deborah Cavendish on their wedding day, before they were the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire

I know we all have the Royal Wedding on our minds these days - only one more day until the festivities begin. And speaking of British aristocracy, one of my favorite books in the last year is written by Deborah Mitford, Duchess of Devonshire. It's called Wait For Me and I can't recommend it more highly. The Duchess has had an amazing life and has lived in some of Englands' finest houses - and helped to restore them too. Chatsworth has been the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire since 1549. Take a look:

Polka Dots

Polka dots are a good way of expressing how you feel in a room. They're very exciting and can lighten up a room with different and bright colours. In some situations, polka dots can be overpowering and can seem very out of place.

This is an example of  polka dots being used in moderation. As we can see, it is a great colour palette with a light brown dresser and a white back round with black polka dots. This room feels calm and elegant. We think its because this room is very basic and there are not that many bright colours.

This bathroom is an example of what not to do. We think this bathroom is overdone and has too many colours clashing with each other. We feel that polka dots in bathrooms are okay in small doses, because it is such a small room and a small amount of polka dots can make it look overdone. The toilet seat cover is not working for this room. To make this room better, we would tone down the colours and put in minimal amounts of polka dots, if any.

We kind of like this room, but we think that it is a bit overdone. The prints and colours clash with each other. If we could change this room, we would take out the striped bedskirt and the patterned pillows, that way, the polka dots would be the center of attention.

Polka dots in accessories look great. They create a focal point in the room. The picture on the left is a polka dotted wall clock that we think would look great in a kitchen. The pillows on the right would be a great accessory in a living room or bedroom, as throw pillows.

Overall, we feel that polka dots are a great idea in most rooms. We think they should be used in moderation and shouldn't be splattered across the entire space.

Globes With A Special Touch... Different and Delightful

You all know how much I love a good globe! Anything map related is fantastic in my book, and a lovely globe really gets me excited!

I couldn't resist buying myself a little globe last weekend when I was out looking at mirrors. I didn't find any mirrors that interested me, but my little globe was very satisfying. It was almost twice the price of the bigger globe you can see above (which I bought at a flea market very cheaply), but at $24.95 I was still happy to add it to my little collection. Thanks Freedom!

If you know me well you also know I have a 'thing' for butterflies.... so imagine my delight when I found the work of Wendy Gold which involves taking old globes and decorating them to turn them into something extraordinary.

Here's one of her butterfly globes...

Here's a globe with a family tree on it. And, yep..... I LOVE trees too, so this one's a stunner in my book as well!

There's also globes based on some well known and very well loved children's books like 'Where The Wild Things Are' and 'Oh, The Places You'll Go'.

I'd love to have a whole collection of these on display.

And, as I love globes, butterflies, trees, and books; these ones would be just grand.

What do you think?

Check out Wendy's ImagineNations website to see her full range of globes.

Whirlwind :)

The past month has felt very surreal between the Shark Tank airing, all the emails and messages of support, and the flights to North Carolina for the International Home Furnishings Market & NYC for the Nate Berkus show.  I feel very, very fortunate to have the support of so many people.  Thanks again for all the press and kind messages!

I've been busy working on growing the business through manufacturing new designs, connecting with new retailers and customers and managing the day-to-day logistics of running a furniture company. I'm so lucky to have an amazing team of people working tirelessly to help me manage all of it.  And I thought building toy boxes was time consuming! :) Thanks so much to Katie Hatch, Lauren Tucker, Julie Martin Sunich, my Mom (part-time assistant) and Dad (QC/East Coast Czar) for shouldering some of the workload. And thanks to my husband and family for being so understanding and juggling schedules to accommodate me being out of town.  And for loving me for who I am faults and all. :)

Here's a few of the press-related links that have shown up over the past few weeks..

The event we were waiting for all year round has finally arrived, the place to be if you are interested in the world of modern design, the place where rigour mixes with creativy , where beauty sometimes surpasses standard common rules. The 2011 Milan Design Week has been a great success and has brought us new ideas, new amazing products for ourselves, our homes, our living spaces. So let's start our journey and explore what's new for this seasons and those yet to come .

White has bonded with color - It is more common to see sparkle of colors in our minimalistic designs ruled by white and neutral tones. Seating furniture becomes more soft and acquire a "casual look" less strict and linear.

We have seen quiet an impressing number of statement armchairs like the one above with round curves and soft fabric covers . The accent pieces must have their glamour time and are not anymore thought as complements to fill up a dead corner of your home.

Fun extras are added to furniture pices like these real blue fur amrchair back cover. Put it in when you need to be pampered up in the winter season, have it off when it's summer time.

House of the Week

Since it's Easter Monday, our house of the week this week is a church. All Saints Church is the oldest standing church in Thomasville, Georgia. It was originally built as a Roman Catholic Church, and has a memorial garden on site also.

From Thomasville.com:

One of the most beautiful historic churches in the region, All Saints was actually built in 1881 as Saint Augustine Roman Catholic Church. It also has the distinction as the church where Jacqueline Kennedy attended mass during a six week private retreat to a Thomasville plantation following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In the early 1980s, the church was saved from demolition, moved to its present site in the Tockwotton Historic District and re-consecrated as an Episcopal Church. Visitors are welcome for self-guided tours Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The church is closed on Friday afternoons during the summer months.
