Hats off to summer style

Our vintage clothing fans will be pleased.  We just got in dozens of vintage hats and hat boxes!  Ann scored this newest bunch at a recent estate sale.  The previous owner had impeccable taste and took great care of her hats, so Ann bought up the entire collection!  Here are a few favorites available now on the third floor of The Old Lucketts Store.

This is a vintage Dana Marte straw hat.  The designer started out in West Germany and then gained fame in New York and Paris.  This hat is available for $39 now, but in its day, would have been the equivalent of a minimum of $140 - a significant investment back then and also today.

This hat is a work of art designed by Lilly Dache, a French milliner and fashion designer born in 1898.  Lilly designed for Hollywood films and had many clients who were movie-stars, including Marlene Dietrich, Caroline Lombard, and Loretta Young.  The hat boxes these hats came in are works of art too.  The vintage boxes bear the names of vintage department stores that have long since been bought up or consolidated.

When buying hats, Ann looks for well known designers, quality materials, and buys only examples that have been well kept.  Price points are set by those factors (designer, materials, condition) as well as subject matter, style, and date.  This hat with a cherry on top is by the designer Mr. John.

How do you date a hat?  If you understand silhouettes that were popular over time, it gets more straightforward.  Old movies are great resources to see what styles were popular in different decades.  Does this hat's silhouette remind you of Audrey Hepburn?  Now you can date it with pretty good accuracy.

Need a new hat to get ready for summer?  Look at the beautiful vintage straw, tulle, and floral pieces available at the shop.

Mod Mom Furniture Announces U.S. Production Expansion

(LOS ANGELES, CA., June 20, 2011)  Mod Mom Furniture, a Los Angeles-based boutique manufacturer of mid-modern-era children’s furniture, recently announced expansion plans via a partnership with L & J Woodworking in Dundee, Ohio, increasing its national and international production capabilities.

Founded in 2007, by Kiersten Hathcock, each piece of Mod Mom Furniture has been individually designed and hand crafted by Hathcock, a self-taught carpenter and mother of two who until recently has managed all manufacturing out of her LA garage. “As a woman who started this company without carpentry skills or furniture design know-how, I’m thrilled to see it grow beyond my workshop,” says Hathcock.

Shortly upon leaving her job as a cable television marketing executive in the Midwest and relocating to Los Angeles, Hathcock discovered a need for quality, well-designed children’s furniture that would enhance—rather than detract--from the family living space. Her current line features an assortment of toy boxes with names like Maude, Noah, Gracie and Owyn.  All integrate a subtle mid-century modern design and are eco-friendly, achieving immense popularity in both in the United States and abroad.

By keeping production in the United States, Mod Mom Furniture can preserve its core values while expanding the brand through existing retailers and via the social media. Hathcock plans to introduce beds, dressers desks and play tables in the next two years. Each handcrafted toy box will now be shipped fully constructed from L&J Woodworking.

“I’m thrilled to be partnering with an Amish manufacturer in my home state of Ohio. It’s rare nowadays for American furniture companies to be able to keep production in US and I’m excited to be one of the few that is making it happen.”

Since its inception in 2007 in a Los Angeles garage, Mod Mom Furniture has sold its line of modern crafted-by-hand children’s toy boxes throughout the United States and Canada.  The line, which features five custom designs—Owyn, Gracie, Bertie, Maude and Noah, has been recently featured on episodes of Shark Tank and the Nate Berkus Show, along with its founder, Kiersten Hathcock.

An expanded version of the Owyn series will be introduced at the 2011 ABC Kids Expo in September.  This newest Mod Mom line will feature twin beds with reversible headboards, a nightstand, and five and three drawer dressers.

Art Walls

At this moment I have all my flat art either on the corner waiting to be hanged somewhere or rolled up inside a plastic tubes waiting for the right frame. I miss looking at them.

Dressing up walls is one of my favorite moments on styling a home. Here's a few inspiration pictures I've found online.

I like the clean aesthetics which give that serenity I like to feel in a bedroom.

A collage framed. Interesting, isn't it?

A good solution when we don't hang the frames on the right spot, is to fill the gaps with other things like jewellery.

I've a few photos I shot, though I'm not sure if I'm going to frame them or just glue them on the walls, something I do since I was a kid.

A Beautiful Find

This past week, we featured a lovely stained glass window on our Fresh Off the Wagon page which we update weekly.  Within minutes of taking the photo and posting the picture last Wednesday on our website, it sold.  It got me thinking of some of my favorites from one of our dealers, Robert, who specializes unique antiques and architectural elements, including doors and windows saved from historic buildings.  Here are a few favorites brought in and sold over the last few months...enjoy!

This was the beautiful stained glass window with a pond and cattails that came in the shop last week and left shortly thereafter with some lucky buyer.

Robert offers a lot of re-purposed antique pieces.  This one caused a stir a few months back.  The old cast iron bathtub was split into two pieces and made into a pair of garden planters.

A beautiful hand carved mirror from the 1800s was offered back in April.

A unique piece from Robert - a vintage fireman's coat and hat.

And yet another unique piece - a window from the "Institute for Wayward Young Women".  I'm not sure where it is, but they sound like a fun bunch!

A beautiful example of a 1920's pair of carved stained glass doors - gorgeous!

Robert is really good at finding new uses for old pieces.  Here is an vintage piano backboard re-purposed with some vintage doorknobs into a one-of-a-kind chalkboard.

And last but not least, a laughing metal elephant lamp - he looks so happy.
You can find Robert's unique finds at The Old Lucketts Store in the 2nd floor hallway, on the 3rd floor, and outside in his pavilion.

Great birthday presents!

Today is my birthday (and my daughter's too). I love birthdays, but don't love getting older...

Presents always soften the blow and these two are perfect gifts! I received these wonderful decorating/architecture books that I know you all will love too. JD gave me David Hicks, A Life of Design, and my mom gave me Lewis Edmund Crook, Jr Architect. Can't wait to dive into them. Thank you to JD and Mom!

Such A Magical Door...

I think this is one of my most favourite doors.... ever....

If I stepped through this one, who knows where I'd be!

Baby Shower Ideas

We have been spoiled... I mean SPOILED by coworkers, friends, and family over the past few weeks! We are expecting our first little one in late July. I am so amazed at the creativity and simply RAD ideas that people around me come up with. Here are just some neat ideas from Baby W's showers:

Waddle on Over to the Duck Pond

Waddle on Over to the Duck Pond Shower Invites from MonogramWedding.com

Gift boxes were provided for guests to fill in with candy and sweets.

The sweets table included candy, cupcakes, and a cake shaped as a  bathtub filled with rubber duckies.

Rubber duck cake and cupcakes

An adorable duck themed diaper cake

The cooler for the drinks was a baby bathtub from our registry. After the party, they gave the tub to us as a gift.

Guests played BINGO as the gifts were opened.

This idea is from Abby @ AbbyandAdam.blogspot.com

Guests were asked to write down their gender, weight, height, and date prediction for the new arrival.

Baby Wilson's Brunch Shower

Brunch Shower Invitation from MonogramWedding.com

Guests were asked to take their name tag from the mirror and guess the arrival date of Baby W by placing it on the calendar. Depending on if they thought Baby W was a boy or a girl, they would use a pink or blue thumbtack.

Guests names were placed on this mirror for them to grab and place on the calendar.

"Dad to Be" guessed a boy on the expected due date.

Guests were asked to fill in the blanks on a card using descriptive words to describe what they thought about Baby W's arrival. They made great keepsakes for us and will be a lot of fun to look back at once Baby W is here.

Lisa made tissue puffs that acted as centerpieces for the tables.

As a favor, guests filled their own goody bags with sweets in the shower colors.

Welcome Baby Hannah Rose

These photos are from a good friend of ours baby shower. Baby Hannah is due just one week before Baby W!

Favor boxes with a petite four were given out to guests as they left.
**All paper products were also printed by MonogramWedding.com**

The favor boxes were displayed on a tiered platter.
A banner saying "Baby Hannah".
The invite for the shower was framed and used as decoration.

Guests were asked to help decorate a onesie for baby Hannah.

The onesie acted as a cute guest book that mom and baby can hold onto for years to come.

Monday Mojo - Imagining This....

On this Monday morning I wish I could see this when I walked out the door!

It's Summer over the other side of the world, but here it's dreary and grey...... again.
So, to help 'get my mojo on' today, I'm going to imagine my day bathed in sunlight and pretty flowers instead!

Have a great week everyone. :)

May the Mojo be with you!
